The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides federal grants to states for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income soon-to-be or new mothers and their children. As a cost-containment measure for the WIC program, private brands are utilized where possible. Each state maintains a list of items that have been approved at the state level for WIC participation.
