New Packaging Elements Educate Consumers

-

As consumers become savvier about the ingredients and components that go into products they purchase for their household, AWG Brands has been working to bring more transparency to packaging through the use of standardized claims and call-outs. Growing the knowledge base around AWG Brands items aligns with the goal of AWG Brands to build trust in every item and helps support the 100% Guarantee offered to consumers.

Added Sugars Called Out

AWG Brands labeling uses Facts up Front® to help deliver at-a-glance product information. This is voluntary but summarizes important nutrition information from the Nutrition Facts Panel in a simple and easy-to-use format. It is designed to help consumers compare products and make more informed choices. The FDA recently updated the Nutrition Facts Label to include added sugars. To align with that addition, AWG Brands products will now call out Added Sugars in the Facts up Front panel. Added sugars can be part of a healthy dietary pattern; however, consuming too much added sugars can make it difficult to meet nutrient needs while staying within recommended calorie limits.

Clearer Allergen Statements

For consumers with food allergies, sensitivities, or other medical conditions, allergen advisory statements may play an important role in what they choose to purchase and consume.  AWG Brands is sensitive to the needs of these consumers and to the responsibility to protect AWG and its retailers against any adverse reactions due to product ingredients or components. In 2022, AWG Brands began standardizing allergen statements to help consumers manage food allergies, sensitivities, or other medical conditions. These statements also help AWG Brands earn trust with consumers. New statements include:

Processed on shared equipment that also processes [allergen(s)]
Processed in a facility that also processes [allergen(s)] but not on shared equipment

Sesame Added as Major Allergen

Last year, Congress passed legislation to define sesame as a major food allergen. This made sesame subject to the plain language labeling disclosure requirements for major food allergens. Starting on January 1, 2023 all AWG Brands food items declare the presence of sesame on their labels.
