Associated Wholesale Grocers is dedicated to providing safe, wholesome food of consistent quality that meets or exceeds our consumers’ expectations. To accomplish this, it is important that AWG Brands suppliers have the same objective. That’s why AWG Brands holds all suppliers to high standards. The AWG Brands team works closely with our strategic partners to develop and bring to market new items. All new items are reviewed and approved by AWG Category Managers, the Food Safety/Quality Assurance Team and tested by Consumer Science. AWG Brands items are tested against benchmarks and suppliers are required to provide technical and label development specifications, shelf-life studies, substantiating documentation for regulated claims, Food Safety Plan, audit certifications, and all disclosures for FDA allergens. Country of Origin Labeling is also required as well as standardized date labels.
- Packaged, shelf-stable foods and beverages are labeled with “BEST if Used By” as an indication of product quality. Products with a “BEST If Used By” date may be used/consumed beyond the labeled date but will not be at optimal quality.
- “USE By” is used on products that are either time or temperature-sensitive or might have possible food safety implications. Products with a “USE By” should be discarded once the date has been reached.
After a new item is introduced to the market, suppliers must agree to routine product audits. All suppliers, at their own cost, must also participate in the AWG Brands testing protocol which includes annual testing and taking corrective actions based on testing outcome. Upkeep of product specifications in the AWG Brands product database is another supplier requirement and allows AWG Brands to deliver important information to consumers through the AWG Brands website and on retailer online shopping platforms.
