AWG’s commitment to converting all warehouse facilities from traditional lighting to energy-efficient LED lighting started in 2019. These efforts positively impact AWG’s Sustainability Program and commitment to fiscal responsibility for our member-retailers.
Many sustainability projects don’t always line up with normal financial metrics; however, the conversion of warehouse lighting to LED is not one of those projects. Traditionally, in the warehouse industry, lighting consumes a significant portion of the utility expense. Many AWG warehouses are larger than 800,000-square feet and operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Lighting is not only expensive; it remains a mission critical component of warehouse operations and safety.
Utilizing AWG’s DSG lighting team, our warehouse lighting was evaluated, and the financial justification given to AWG leadership for converting to LED lighting. With the DSG’s guidance, we anticipate an 80% increase in efficiency compared to traditional lighting. Monetary savings are not only from increased efficiency and lower operating costs, but are also realized via daily maintenance and labor costs. LED lights have warranty-backed life spans ranging from 50,000-100,000 hours. In comparison, traditional lighting typically achieves 10% of that. Each AWG warehouse uses hundreds of light fixtures. Labor costs spent replacing burnt out bulbs has been greatly reduced.
In addition to financial benefits from cheaper utilities and decreased labor, better lighting impacts the safety of the warehouses. AWG has realized a quick return on this investment and has had significant positive impact and success. Better, cheaper and more energy efficient makes for better sustainability.
