Next June, the dairy industry will celebrate 86 years of National Dairy Month. What started as National Milk Month in 1937 soon evolved into National Dairy Month to promote the entire dairy industry. The National Dairy Council (NDC) and the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) come together each year in June to help the grocery industry and nation celebrate all things dairy throughout the month.
The USDA recommends that everyone has three servings of dairy a day, which can come from milk, yogurt, or cheese. These tasty products contain nine essential nutrients that can help consumers build
strong bones, repair muscle tissue, maintain healthy skin, and reduce the risk of high blood pressure. With so many benefits, it only makes sense to encourage customers to enjoy as much dairy as possible.
In 1937, the goal of Milk Month was to stabilize the demand for dairy, mainly in the form of milk at that time. Today, the goal is to recognize all things dairy, from the farmers and products to the dairy industry as a whole. To help grocers participate each year, the NDC and IDFA create infographics, recipes, and short videos that can be used with in-store and online promotions through print ads, emails, and social media posts.
What better way to kick off summer than with National Dairy Month? Can’t you see customers enjoying a glass of milk and yogurt for breakfast and some cheese with their afternoon snacks? Of course, ice cream is always a crowd-pleaser.
