CITRUS FARMERS ARE PRESERVING THE LAND FOR TOMORROW’S GENERATION

Sunkist’s grower-owners manage 104,000 acres of citrus in California and Arizona.

  • Host for bees – citrus farmers host honey bees in their orchards.
  • Responsible Water Management – citrus farmers have long used the most advanced technology with soil moisture monitors and micro-sprinklers to water trees for just what it needs.
  • No-till farming – improves soil health
  • Hedgerows help with soil erosion; water filtration; and provide bee and butterfly habitat
  • Integrated Pest Management – farmers employ predator pests like wasps to combat pests that carry disease that kill the tree.

SUNKIST’S PACKAGING GOALS

  • BY 2025, 40% OF SUNKIST PACKAGING WILL BE MADE WITH RECYCLED MATERIAL
  • We have INCREASED OUR RECYCLED CONTENT in our carton packaging to 62%, and its certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). SFI ensures that our cardboard is sourced from forests that are managed to protect water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, and at-risk species.
  • 100% RECYCLABLE – Our packaging is recyclable
  • EASIER TO RECYCLE – We are making our packaging easier to recycle by providing information on how to recycle.
  • WE ARE CUTTING THE PLASTIC IN OUR BAGS
  • REPLACING PLASTIC PACKAGING with alternative packaging – Sunkist is focused on finding alternative packaging solutions that replace plastic packaging while still being affordable.

Organic Net Bags – We cut the plastic

  • Removed plastic laminate on header to create a paper header and changed the poly thread to cotton thread.
  • Separate and recycle – It’s easier to recycle by separating the paper header from plastic netting.
  • 100% Recyclable

Giro Bags

Reduce the Film Width to create more plastic savings – (Total plastic savings will be calculated based on fruit variety and size.)

  • Moving from 145mm wide Film to 119mm wide Film = 18% reduction in plastic per Roll
  • Moving from 119mm wide Film to 99mm wide Film = 17% reduction in plastic per Roll
  • Moving from 145mm wide Film to 99mm wide Film = 32% reduction in plastic per Roll
  • Less plastic with Lighter Netting
  • Moved from 6gr weight to 5.6gr weight netting = 6% reduction in plastic

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

  • Sunkist’s affiliated packinghouses are independently audited to the SMETA social responsibility standard to ensure WORKER HEALTH AND SAFETY
  • The on-site audit is designed to protect workers from unsafe working conditions, low pay, and discrimination; and ensure compliance with local labor laws on health and safety.
  • Endorses the IFPA Ethical Charter on RESPONSIBLE LABOR PRACTICES
